Memories From Grandson Robert Living in Germany
Mom,

I want to share with you how special Grandmother is to me. I have many fond memories of spending time with Grandmother. I can remember vividly making match houses in her living room as a child. I liked lighting the gas heaters in her house on Columbus Ave. just so we would have more used matches. Also, I remember playing with my Matchbox cars on her living room rug. It made a perfect track (it was the rug that had cords that went round and round in an oval.) I can remember laying on her couch and watching Capt. Kangaroo with her and granddaddy. I can see us watching as Mr. Green Jeans helped to transplant a huge pecan tree. Speaking of pecans, I loved picking up pecans with and for Grandmother in her backyard. They also made great bait for trapping squirrels in the cat cage. I would line up pecans into the cage and wait inside the backdoor. Then when the squirrels went into the cage, I would run out and shut the door. I can remember grandmother letting us (grandchildren) make mud pies in her backyard. We would use every flower pot and or pot plate to make the grandest pies. Speaking of pies, my favorite pie is the chocolate meringe pie grandmother used to make that you now make. I can still see grandmother as she was preparing for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at her house on Columbus. She used a 5 gallon bucket to fix her now-world-famous dressing. Danyel has served it here in Germany for 2 Christmases and it has been a hit each time. I can remember grandmother making BLTs, liver and onions and fried okra. Now that I think about it I can remember growing okra and other veggies with grandmother and granddad. I remember learning how to turn over the soil with a pitchfork and how to plant seeds in their garden. I remember catching and playing with a gray grass snake in the garden. I believe my love of gardening comes from some of those days. I remember eating a very messy pomegranite picked fresh from a bush or tree in Grandmother's backyard. While at Baylor Basketball Camp, I remember Grandmother bragging to her co-workers as Stephen and I went through the food line. Grandmother taught me to be polite and courteous to neighbors. I remember she would encourage us to visit her neighbors and help them when we could. I also remember Mr. Cooper helping Grandmother. Because of this, I try to be a good neighbor whereever I am. I am writing this note to share with you how much I love Grandmother and to let you know that I will miss her. I wish I could be there today as she is laid to rest. I know that I will see grandmother again in heaven.

Grandmother has a very special place in my heart.

Love,
Robert
