Samuel (Sam) Bessire, Jr., 88, of Waco's Bosqueville area, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at a local hospital.
Graveside services will be 2 pm Saturday, April 9, 2005 at Bosqueville Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Wyers officiating.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.
Mr. Bessire was born May 15, 1916 in Hill County near Aquilla to S.E. Bessire, Sr. and Gertrude (Cox) Bessire. He lived in the Waco area most of his life.
During WW II he was in Texas 36th Division, Co. K 143 Infantry. He was captured by the enemy in Italy and spent twenty months and six days in German Prison Camps Stalag VII, II B, III A and III B. After the war he was employed by Waco V.A. Medical Center Engineering Division from 1947-1973. From 1975-1980 he was a Bailiff in Waco 19th District Court.
He was a member of Community Baptist Church, 36th Infantry Division, Co K of the 143rd Infantry Association, Waco Chapter #1 American Ex-prisoners of War, Inc., American Legion Post # 0440, Chapter # 3 Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars # 6003 and Woodman of the World.
He was preceded in death by his parents, former wife, Edna Ryals (Campbell) Bessire; four brothers, Aubrey, Chester, Wilmer, and Charlie, and sister, Ima Bessire-Clements.
Survivors include his wife, Annie; sisters, Velma Barren of San Angelo, Veneta Bates and Audrey Box of Waco, Bettie Veteto of Valley Mills; two step-daughters, Barbara Campbell O'Neal of Dallas and Patricia Hawkins-McCormick and husband, A.J. (Joe) McCormick of Sunnyvalle; four step-grandchildren, Carlton O'Neal and wife, Allison of LaJoya, CA., Kai Ashley Newton and husband, Joe of Waco, Michael J. and B. Ann McCormick of Sunnyvale; and many nieces and nephews.
