Stephen Gerald McGuire was born on January 21, 1940 to Gerald “Jerry” and Golda
(nee Gaarder) McGuire. He spent his youth in Kermit, Texas, participating in choir and being
involved in the Methodist church. After graduating high school in 1958, he attended San Angelo
Junior College and North Texas University, where he graduated in 1963 with a B.S. in Physical
Education. He taught school for a number of years before entering the U.S. Army in 1966. He
attended Officer Candidate School, after which, he was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington
where he received an Honorable Discharge with a rank of First Lieutenant in 1969.
Stephen met the love of his life, Trudy Angela Crawford, in West, Texas while being a
Sunday School Teacher and a member of the choir at the Methodist Church. They were
married on May 28, 1966. After leaving the Army, they settled in Waco, Texas, where they
made a loving home and raised their two sons, Ian and Kerry.
After his service, Stephen picked up his teaching career again at Waco ISD. Over the
30-plus years at WISD, he taught a variety of classes and coached thousands of kids in football
and soccer, many of whom remembered him years after graduation and happily greeted him
and shook his hand if they saw him out. In his free time, he, along with Trudy, volunteered to
man the front desk of the Strecker Museum on weekends and was an active member of Cogdell
Memorial United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his sons Ian (Elizabeth) McGuire and Kerry (Deb) McGuire, his
grandson, Keegan, his brother David McGuire of San Antonio, his sister Ruth Eads of Dallas,
his sister-in-law Gwen (Don) Reeves, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and
former students.
Stephen’s visitation will be held at Oak Crest Funeral home on Friday, May 10 from
6:00-8:00 PM. His funeral service will be on Saturday, May 11 at Cogdell Memorial UMC from
10:00-11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cogdell Memorial UMC.
