Syble Orlena (Adams) Bowles, 86, of Waco, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2004, at 7:20 a.m. at her residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. David Story officiating. Entombment will follow in Waco Memorial Park-North Mausoleum.
Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque.
Orlena was born to Samuel H. and Willie (Crenshaw) Adams in Hallsburg on December 12, 1919. She moved to Waco when she was seven years old. Orlena was a member of the Daughters of the Nile No. 104, MERAK Temple, the Supreme Assembly No. 199, the Social Order of the Beauchant and the Fonce Club.
Orlena was a workaholic and was never without a job. She sewed rope of the tents used in World War II at Crawford-Austin Company, was a Lab Optician for Dr. Stanley R. Block, worked at the Waco Tribune-Herald before going to work for the Fort Worth Star Telegram, and was a hair stylist for 42 years. She owned Orlena's Hair Fashions on Lake Air Drive for many years. Orlena and her husband Alonzo were co-owners of the Hob-Knob Drive Ins for seven years with her beloved sister Ruby and brother-in-law Roger Cannon.
In 1947, Orlena Adams met the love of her life, Alonzo Bowles, at a Fourth of July picnic; and they were married on January 16, 1948. They were married for 56 years.
Orlena is survived by her beloved husband, Alonzo, and her two loving sisters, Prudie Sexton and Opal Everett of Waco. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Lillian Newman of Waco and Evelyn Barnett of Hearne. Orlena will be missed by many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Ronnie L. Reat. Sr., Ronnie L. Reat, Jr., Russ and Jacob Swatek. Ben Rush, and Fred Logan.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Swenson, Edward Staas, and Jim Peng.
Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Hospital or Richfield Christian Church.
