Visitation will be at OakCrest Funeral Home Tuesday, November 24 from 4 to 6 p.m. A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, November 25 at 1 p.m. at OakCrest Funeral Home, with graveside services following at Oakwood Cemetery.
Tama was born August 19, 1922 in Abbott, Texas to Robert Palmer Porter and Nannie Dell Gravitt Porter. She graduated at the top of her class from Hillsboro High School and attended Baylor University until her junior year, when, due to the death of her mother, she returned home to care for her younger sister. For over 50 years, Tama worked for Dr. Woodrow M. Avent as his office manager.
Tama was an active member of the Altrusa Club International for many years. Her joy was found in helping other people in a quiet and personal way. She especially loved doing things to help the elderly patients. Tama had a great sense of humor and quick wit. She enjoyed writing poetry, often writing poems to console and encourage friends who were grieving or facing a trial in life or penning fun verses to celebrate birthdays or other happy times. Her enjoyment of cooking was a blessing to all who tasted her fabulous Italian Cream Cake. She was an avid reader, enjoyed the theater, and traveled most of the United States.
Tama was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Nannie Porter; a brother, Theryl Porter; a sister, Ina Burdick; brother-in-law Vernon Burdick; and nephew, Vernon Burdick, Jr.
She is survived by her loving sister, Marie Porter, who cared for her during this time; her brother, James Howard Porter and his wife, Bettie Porter; two nieces, Jamie Monroe and her husband, Bruce, and Nancy Toups and her husband, Ron; and several great nieces and nephews whom she loved very much. Her family, friends, and neighbors will miss her kindness, her laughter, and her wittiness.
Pallbearers are Les Fisseler, Chris Edwards, Bill Warren, Michael Criner, Ron Toups and Zachary Toups.
Honorary pallbearer is J.T. Carpenter.
