The Reverend Turner Erath Hubby, III. went home to the Lord on August 30, 2024 in Double Oak, Texas. He was born in Waco, Texas on June 23, 1936, the only child of Turner E. Hubby, Jr. and Christine W. Hubby.
Most of Turner’s early years were in the Fort Worth and Mineral Wells area and he graduated from Wichita Falls High School. Turner married his sweetheart, Martha Harris, in 1956. He went on to attend Midwestern University in Wichita Falls where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration. He began immediately working in the banking industry. From rolling pennies in the bank basement to bank examiner for the Federal Reserve to Vice President to Bank Owner, Turner showed himself to be faithful and trustworthy in both business and personal relationships.
Despite the professional success he had enjoyed, he came to realize that there was more to life than what he had yet experienced. He attended a spiritual conference hosted by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Waco at which time he dedicated his life to Christ. From that point forward he was passionately involved in lay ministry in the Episcopal Church.
Turner loved serving, whether it was as a lay reader, chalice bearer, or in various roles of Cursillo weekends. After several years of service, he was encouraged to pursue Holy Orders. After much prayer, he and Martha felt God’s call to apply to The Episcopal Seminary of The Southwest in Austin, Texas, where he earned his Masters of Divinity degree in 1987.
Following Seminary, Turner was ordained as a Deacon and later as a Priest at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Marlin, Texas. He served at St. John’s from 1987 until he retired in 2002. He lovingly and faithfully served this congregation as a pastor, teacher, counselor, and friend.
Despite his official retirement, he did not cease to serve the Episcopal Church. He provided ministerial support to other congregations throughout Robertson County, and later as a bible study teacher, prayer ministry leader, and Celebrant at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in San Antonio.
After a brief illness, Turner joyfully left this life to enter the Life that he has long believed in and hoped for - a Life in Heaven with the One who has loved him with an everlasting love.
Turner is survived by his wife of 68 years, Martha; four children, Carol Golden and husband, Travis, Melissa Galley and husband, Paul, Jana Greer and husband, Greg, and Douglas Hubby and wife, Zena; as well as 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
A burial service will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco, Texas on Friday, September 6 at 11:00 AM, The Reverend Dr. Andrew Armond of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Waco, Texas officiating.
Pallbearers will be Travis Golden, Paul Galley, Greg Greer, Doug Hubby, Andy Golden, Nate Ball, Daniel Greer, and Caleb Hubby.
In lieu of flowers, you may wish to give in memory of Turner to the Diocese of Texas, St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Waco, Texas, or to St. Thomas Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas.
