Thomas Anthony George, known to all as “Tommy”, a man of boundless generosity and unwavering kindness, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2024 at the age of 99 in his beloved hometown of Waco, Texas. He was born on March 19, 1925, the son of Joseph and Grace Shalauhy and was the loving husband of Helen Azar George. Together for 58 years, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Tommy was a devoted father to three children: Lisa Pohl (married to John Pohl), Marc George (married to Kim George), and Gina Gardenhire (married to Michael Gardenhire). His family was his pride and joy, and he found immense happiness in their accomplishments and milestones.
His love and warmth extended through generations as a grandfather, “Jiddo” to six: Taye-Lyn Painter, Mason George, Haley Bottoms, Jordan Storch, Sydney Weddle, and Michael Gardenhire and a great grandfather to three: Bryson Bottoms, Wells George, and Clare Storch.
Tommy proudly served his country during World War II, bravely fighting in the South Pacific. He was wounded in action and received the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts for his valor and dedication to duty. His sacrifices and service to his country will never be forgotten.
Tommy was known for his big heart and his ability to make everyone feel welcome. He never met a stranger, and his genuine kindness touched the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was also a respected business owner for more than 50 years.
An avid outdoorsman, Tommy found solace and joy in fishing, a passion that earned him widespread recognition. Everyone knew him for his remarkable fishing abilities, and he proudly held the title of Texas State Bass Fishing Champion for numerous years. If ever Tommy was absent, a sure bet was to find him out on the tranquil waters, for it was there that he found his greatest peace and joy.
He was a skilled hunter, baseball player, golfer, and bowler, excelling in every pursuit he undertook. His talents were as varied as they were impressive, reflecting his passion for life and his commitment to excellence.
Born, raised, and having spent his entire life in Waco, Texas, Tommy was deeply rooted in his community. He was a pillar of strength and support for those around him, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer words of wisdom. Tommy George leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering kindness. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched forever.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Grace Shalauhy; his beloved wife, Helen Azar George; siblings, George George, John George, Joseph George, Taft George, and Josephine George; and niece, Grace Ann Givens. Their memories will forever be cherished alongside his. Eternal rest grant unto them Oh Lord and may Perpetual Light shine upon them.
Tommy will be in state starting at 5:00 pm on June 13, 2024 with the Rosary recited at 6:00 pm, and visitation from 6:30-8:00 pm at OakCrest Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, June 14, 2024 at 2:00 pm at St. Jerome Catholic Church with the Very Rev. James Ekeocha and Father Cyril Ejaidu as celebrants. Burial service to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Marc George, Mike Gardenhire, Jack Pohl, Mason George, Michael Gardenhire, and Alex Azar.
