Vera Wentzel
October 28, 1918 - September 29, 2007
Vera Catherine Wentzel, age 88, departed this life on September 28, 2007 three days before her 89th birthday. Mass will be 2 p.m. Friday Oct. 5, at St. Catherine's Chapel with Msgr. Mark Deering officiating.
She was born October 1, 1918 to Frank William and Emma Mae (Studer) Suerdieck being the second of six children.
Vera was born in Tipp City, Ohio where she grew up working in the family grocery store. At an early age Vera started learning how to care for people moving out of the family home as a teenager to care for her ailing grandmother. She spent the rest of her life caring for others. She completed nursing school in Indianapolis at the St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a registered nurse and supervisor in Indiana, Kansas, Illinois, California, Ohio, and Oklahoma. After retiring, Vera was a volunteer at St. John's Catholic Church, for many years. Even into her 60's she was providing in-home care for "old people" – of course they were actually her age but needed more help than she. In Vera's later years her care was given by Marc and Kathy (Marc's wife) for whom Vera was very grateful.
Vera loved to watch football and was an avid '49ers fan, attending several of their games over the years. She liked to travel including going with friends to Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas, and attending her grandson's weddings and special events.
Vera is preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Elmer Morris "Chic" Wentzel, and her sister and two brothers, Loraine, William and Carl. Vera is survived by her younger bother and sister, Thomas and Sandra.
Vera is also survived by her two sons and two daughter in-laws Craig Thomas and Kathy Thomas, and Marc Hillary and Kathy Young, three grandchildren – Eric Paul, Bryan Patrick and Kevin Michael, and four great grandchildren – Paige, Carter, Gracie and Hugh.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Memory of Vera Wentzel to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, PO Box 510, Edmond, OK 73083-0510.
