Virginia Carmen Johnson Davis, 92, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 20, 2019. The visitation will be on Friday, March 22 from 3:00-5:00 at OakCrest Funeral Home in Waco. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, March 23, at Old Palestine Cemetery in Alto, TX.
Virginia was born in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma on October 31, 1926 to Ercelle and Raymon Johnson. When she was 4 years old, her family moved to Alto, Texas. Virginia graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Alto High School in 1944. After high school, Virginia took courses to become a telegraph operator for Western Union. She worked as a telegraph operator and secretary until her retirement in 1979. Her children have fond memories of her sending them telegrams at school.
Virginia met the love of her life, Hubert Davis, in Texas City. They married on March 22, 1947. Virginia and Hubert raised their four children in Texas City where they lived for 33 years. They were active members of Calvary Baptist Church and First Baptist Church. They led youth groups and taught Sunday School for many years. After retirement, Virginia and Hubert moved to Alto, TX. Virginia loved to plan trips for the Super Seniors at their church in Alto. They moved to Kingwood in 1992 and became involved at First Baptist Church. They also lived in Shenandoah and Conroe. At the time of her death, she was living in Waco.
Virginia and Hubert traveled all over the world. They lived in Italy, China, and South Korea as part of Hubert’s work. They visited over 30 countries and all 50 states. Virginia enjoyed planning trips, entertaining friends in her home, and hosting family reunions. Virginia was a great cook! She loved to make special meals for her family and friends. Her family was very important to her. Her favorite times were when the family was gathered together. Virginia had a strong faith in God and passed her Christian values on to her children and grandchildren.
Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Ernest Johnson and Ford Johnson, and one sister, Wanda Marcus. She is also preceded by her husband of 68 years, Hubert Davis, her granddaughter, Rebecca Davis, and great-granddaughter, Clara Gough.
She is survived by her brother, Bill Johnson and wife, Herland of Alto and sister, Wilma Hansen of Houston and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her four children, John Davis of Montgomery, TX, Charles Davis and wife, Karen of Houston, Jan Davis Johnson and husband Kevin of Fort Worth, Diane Davis Gough and husband, Robert of Waco. Virginia leaves behind 11 grandchildren. Lindsey Davis Stover and husband, Jeremey of McLean VA; Cody Davis and wife, Karen of Kingwood; Elizabeth Davis of Houston; Mary Davis of Houston; Allyson Davis of Oklahoma City; Scott Johnson and wife, Alden of Fort Worth; Jeff Johnson and wife, Jennifer of Galveston; Greg Johnson and wife, Savannah of Brazil; Ryan Gough and wife, Angela of Kailua, HI; Riley Gough and wife, Tami of Hutto; Patrick Gough and wife, Elizabeth of Kingwood. Virginia’s legacy is also continued through her 13 great-grandchildren.
