Virginia Rose Steinke, 89, of Waco, passed away Friday, February 6, 2015. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Chapel Hill Memorial Park with Rev. Curtis Holland officiating. Visitation will be 4 – 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Boulevard.

Virginia was born March 6, 1925 in Waco to Tom and Ethel (Strickland) Shofner. She spent her childhood in Crawford where she enjoyed swimming in Tonkawa Falls. She graduated in 1942 from Crawford High School where she was a cheerleader and participated in basketball and tennis. After graduation she worked at the Bluebonnet Ordnance Plant making munitions during World War II. She attended 4C Business College and worked for General Tire and Texas Farm Bureau. While at General Tire, Virginia met Pete Steinke and they were married in 1960 in Waco.
After retirement she enjoyed traveling with her family. The joy of her life was caring for her two grandsons. She was a lifelong Democrat and a dedicated sports fan of Baylor Athletics. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and watching General Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon (Pete) Steinke; her parents; and brothers, Tom Jr., Strick, and Pat Shofner.

She is survived by her son, Max Steinke and wife, Laurie, and grandchildren, Thomas and Matthew; sister-in-law, Ruth Steinke; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family thanks Dr. Pitts at Waco Cardiology; the nurses and staff at Providence Medical Center; St. Catherine Rehab; and Providence Hospice for their loving care.
