William Mack Turner, 85, of Waco passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Friday August 3, 2007.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 6, at the OakCrest Funeral Home. Joe Broadway will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Van Vowell of Grace Temple Baptist Church.
Burial will be follow at Waco Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, August5, at the OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. A memorial video honoring his life will be shown during the visitation.
William (Bill) Turner was born June 12, 1922 in Aquilla, to Floyd and Sylva May Turner. He was raised in Bellmead and attended LaVega schools. He left Bellmead to travel with a friend through Mexico and the Southwest. In 1940, he joined the U.S. Army and was attached to the calvary. He served his country proudly through the war years and was honorably discharged on Dec. 7, 1945. He married the love of his life, Annie Katherine Lyles, on Dec. 18, 1945. Six years later they had their only child, Kristina Ann.
He attended Chicago Industrial Training Institute in Chicago, Ill. where he received a degree in machine drafting and design in 1948. He returned to Waco and began a career as an occupational therapist with the V.A. Hospital. After 33 years, he retired. He moved to Lake Belton where he enjoyed fishing, traveling, cabinet making, and attending Moffat Baptist Church. He was ordained as a deacon of the Baptist church in 1982.
He also attended TSTC, receiving a certification in refrigeration. He and Katherine later moved to Teague, and in 1999 they returned to Waco. He was a member of Grace Temple Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Bernice Johnson; and a granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Franks.
He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Kristina and husband James Franks; his granddaughter, Sonja and husband Paul Lange; three great grandchildren, Ethan, Keally, and Xavier Lange; and a sister, Margaret Young.
The family would like to especially thank the Vista Care Hospice workers who saw him through the final days, and all the doctors and nurses whose time, effort and care gave him so many extra quality years.
