Mrs. Winnie Marie Franklin Vick, 81, of Waco, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at a local nursing facility.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Austin Ave., Waco, with Dr. Jimmy Johnson officiating. Internment will immediately follow at Oakwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Winnie was born in Abilene November 4, 1927 and raised in Corpus Christi through high school. Winnie will be especially remembered for her extraordinary creativity and gentle nature.
Her loves were reading, gardening, bridge, sewing, watching UT sports, travel, her family, friends and her pet dogs. She enjoyed working in the garden and making flower arrangements for her husband's dental office - roses were her favorites.
As a competitor and regular entrant in the Waco Heart Of Texas Fair and Rodeo (Fine Arts Division) she was consistently recognized for her hand sewn pieces and clothing; her sewing room is decorated with multiple tri-color ribbons. Winnie also served as an officer and judge for the H.O.T. Fair.
She enjoyed travel with her husband Jim (especially the national parks and Las Vegas) and found the front seat of the family car a great place to embroider on cross-country trips to dental conventions with her husband.
For many years she played Ladies Golf at Lake Waco Country Club and regularly brought home putting awards. She was also a member of the Ladies Dental Auxiliary and a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Waco.
Winnie was a wonderful wife, devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Verda and Della Franklin, and a sister, Geraldine.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dr. James A. Vick, a retired children's dentist, whom she originally met at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, where they both worked prior to their marriage in 1953. Jim and Winnie Vick moved to Waco in 1961 and have made Waco their home ever since. In addition to many beloved friends, she is survived by two sisters, Mary Klingler (of Worland, Wyoming), and Louise Johnson (of Round Rock, Texas); her son Joseph J. Vick (Jimmy) and daughter-in-law Patricia Vick (of Ft. Collins, Colorado); granddaughter Shelby Vick (a student at University of Virginia); and grandson Emmett Vick (a student at Colorado State University).
