Woodrow M. "Jack" Terry, 88, of Waco, passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2007, in a Waco nursing center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, August 11, at St. Louis Catholic Church with Father David Leibham as celebrant. The rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Friday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd., followed by visitation with the family.
Woodrow M. "Jack" Terry was born to Samuel Franklin and Nancy (Matheny) Terry on February 28, 1919, in Waco. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, rising in rank to Master Sergeant as Regimental Sergeant Major with the 271st Infantry Regiment, 69th Infantry Division. He remained with that organization throughout World War II, primarily in Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster and several campaign medals including the Combat Infantryman Badge and multiple Good Conduct medals.
After an honorable discharge at the end of the War, he returned to Texas where he married Annie Agnes Kasberg on December 4, 1945. After a brief employment in Houston, he returned to Waco and worked for the Maytag Co. until 1952, when he was employed as a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service.
In September, 1958, he joined the Roman Catholic Church after instruction from Monsignor Mark Deering, and was one of the founding members of St. Louis Catholic Church. He retired from the Postal Service in 1981. He was a member of VFW Post 2148 and the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 404, Waco.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Annie, and loving family including son, Robert and wife, Sylvia, of Houston; daughter, Patricia Kelly and husband, Steve, of Newton, Kansas; son, John and wife, Linda, of Keene; son, Paul and wife, Sharon, of Ft. Worth; and son, Mark, of Waco. Grandchildren include Bobby Terry of Nashville; Aaron Kelly and wife, April, of Lubbock; Brian Kelly and wife, Sarah, of Joplin, Missouri; Christopher Kelly, of Houston; Stephanie Terry of Burleson ; James Terry of Burleson; step-grandchildren, Jeffrey Lyons and Kimberlee Lyons of Burleson; Paul, Peter, and Mary Terry, of Ft. Worth; and Ky Terry of Laurel, Mississippi. He also leaves one sister, Janet Silaff of Leroy.
